
Pearl jewelry are not only elegant and appealing to the eye,they are considered to offer the power of love, money, protection and luck. Pearls are thought to give wisdom through experience, to quicken the laws of karma and to cement engagements and love relationships.
There are many types of pearls:
Natural Pearls are pearls that are formed without human interference.
Cultured pearls are made when a foreign substance is intentionally inserted into a living oyster. This method was first used in 1893.
Baroque pearls are those with irregular shapes.
Biwa pearls are irregular shaped pearls which forms in the freshwater of Lake Biwa, Japan.
Blister pearls are pearls which grow attached to the inside of the shell.
Fresh water pearls are formed in freshwater and resemble puffed rice.
Seed pearls are small, tiny pearls used in Victorian jewellry and sewn on clothing.
Pearls vary in color and range from white to different shades of white and pink. There are also gray and black pearls which can be matched with your dress.
Each coloration depends on the the type of mollusk and the water where the mollusk lived. Because the nacres is organic, pearls are very sensitive to extreme heat, acids, dryness and humidity. Care should be taken when storing them.
When you think of pearls the immediate color that comes to mind is white pearls. But it is not uncommon to find black pearls as well as illustrated in the above picture.
